DIY Advice: What Paint Sheen should I use?

To continue our previous months thread, you now have your colors picked out. Next: what sheen or finish to purchase? Sheen or finish is determined by usage. The higher the traffic or wear the higher the sheen level recommended. Keeping in mind that lower sheens – flat and matte – are more forgiving of wall imperfections but do not stand up to repeated washing that well. In contrast, higher sheens of low-lustre, eggshell, semi-gloss and gloss can withstand repeated washings but highlight wall/trim imperfections. In most cases, we generally recommend an eggshell for walls and semi-gloss for trim. And with few exceptions always use latex products.
